After nine days of feeding sandflies and tracking

After nine days of feeding sandflies and tracking deer, @rtuxy and I spent two days at the @owenriverlodge annual women’s week. We came in at the tail end of the trip, but the fishing was still hot and the gals were still hilarious. Absolutely spectacular experience and I can’t wait to do it again. Ps, Dame Lynda Topp was there. I’d heard about her through Fish and Game @fishandgamenz but hadn’t actually met her. Talk about a fascinating woman! Hope to have her on the podcast soon. Stay tuned!

Nine days of grinding, a few decent opportunities,

Nine days of grinding, a few decent opportunities, lots of sandflies, wet socks and laughs. We aren’t going home with meat, but I was pretty chuffed with this 12-point deadhead I spotted in the bush. @rtuxy and I are now officially treating ourselves with a couple days of fishing at @owenriverlodge and the @elevenexperience - it’s women’s week and should be awesome!

I grieved salmon and steelhead when I made the decision to live half my year in the southern hemisphere. I know that sounds dramatic (I’ve been told so on numerous occasions), but the feeling of emptiness remained despite the exciting introduction to Murray cod, huge browns, and all things salty.

I’ll never forget the first time I was told that New Zealand has ocean-run chinook. It was close to a decade ago as I marched through the braids of a wide, milky river when Charles let it slip that “perhaps the salmon were in”. I dug my heels into the gravel, peppered him with questions, and never looked at the water the same again.

We found them once, rolling in a deep hole, their backs bright even against the moody sky. I stood there until dark, trying desperately to get my fly down in the funky current, my chest growing heavier as both the dark and Charles told me it was time to go. Since then, I’ve thought about those fish regularly. When I’m homesick, they bring me back to life.

So when writer and Anchored member, Jason Harman @aotearoaflyfisher and salmon/trout guide, Neil Goldie @goldieneil , invited me to come down to explore Neil’s homewaters — specifically to catch chinook — I didn’t hesitate to book the flight.
