Do you remember the first time you saw Hank Patterson on screen? I certainly do. I didn’t know what exactly I was watching, but I was laughing and left wanting more. Travis Swartz’s character, Hank Patterson, is a self-proclaimed world-renowned fly fishing guide and instructor who exudes confidence in scenarios he knows very little about. His comedy pokes light-hearted fun at some of the more debatable topics in fly fishing, allowing all of us to make fun of ourselves in some form or another.

In my recent podcast with him, I promised to share a video we filmed in 2014 (a spoof of another film I’d made a few years before). It was a memorable experience that shed light on the man behind the hilarious character. In the episode of Anchored, Travis and I discuss his life as an actor and producer before turning to fly fishing humor, how the Hank Patterson character came to be, how he approaches comedy in our sport, and the film he and I made close to a decade ago (which you can find below). If you’re not a subscriber, I hope you will be soon!

Travis Swartz, the mastermind behind Hank Patterson, has brought a unique blend of comedy and fly fishing to our screens. His character has become a beloved figure in the fly fishing community, making us all laugh at the quirks and idiosyncrasies of our own passion. Sensei is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The podcast shares a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this video. Travis Swartz, the man behind Hank Patterson, is a true artist in his craft, and you won’t want to miss this captivating conversation about his life, his character, and the delightful world of fly fishing comedy.
